From the UN & diplomacy to mentoring global careers
Hello, I’m Ghita El Khyari — founder of Career Beyond Borders.
For nearly two decades, I worked in diplomacy, development, and international relations — most of it within the United Nations system.
I’ve served in a Country Office and at headquarters, led global teams, and reached P5 level. Overall, I contributed to or oversaw more than 100 recruitments across diverse functions and regions.
It was an extraordinary journey — but also one that showed me how opaque and discouraging the system can feel to talented professionals trying to enter or grow within it.
That’s why I created Career Beyond Borders: to make the path clearer, fairer, and more intentional for those who want to build meaningful international careers.
I started my UN journey in my twenties, driven by a deep belief that diplomacy and multilateralism can change lives.
Like many of you, I learned to navigate complex systems, shifting priorities, and global contexts — often without a map.
Over the years, I realized that technical expertise alone isn’t enough.
Progress requires clarity, visibility, and confidence.
I’ve coached and mentored dozens of colleagues along the way — young professionals, consultants, and mid-level staff — who all faced similar questions:
“How do I get into the UN?”
“How can I move from temporary to fixed?”
“How do I prepare for a UN Competency-based interview?”
Helping them succeed became the most fulfilling part of my work.
Everything I teach is built around three interconnected pillars:
Clarity – Understand the system and the type of international career you want.
Strategy – Define your vision, position yourself effectively, and plan your next steps.
Confidence – Build the leadership mindset and presence that allow you to thrive at every stage.
These are not abstract concepts — they’re the tools that helped me move from entry-level consultant to senior UN leader, and now they’re what I share with you.
